About
My name carries deep meaning: "Calandra," a beautiful tropical flower and lark, "Devona," meaning defender, and my Irish surname, "Mitchell," reminds me of the strength of the fighting Irish. Each name represents who I am—resilient, nurturing, and driven by purpose.
I live by the motto: No one needs a handout, but a hand up. My journey of service began in childhood when a close family friend entered a shelter. I promised God that one day, I would open a homeless shelter. Years later, I found myself in a shelter with my five children, experiencing firsthand the struggles of survival. That humbling experience deepened my desire to help others and fueled my passion for community service.
Throughout my life, I’ve been driven to make a difference. From organizing outreach events like Seeing the Love of Jesus and Purses with a Purpose, to distributing eyeglasses, hygiene products, and other essentials to those in need, I’ve always believed in the power of compassion in action. I’ve also led holiday programs like Joy to the World, helping over 100 families with gifts, resources, and food.
In 2022, I fulfilled a long-held dream of traveling to Liberia for mission work. The experience was life-changing, confirming my calling to serve not only locally but globally. Partnering with local leaders, I organized block parties, distributed essential items, and helped over 600 people. The joy on the children’s faces as they chased bubbles, despite the harsh conditions, was unforgettable. Yet, the overwhelming need weighed heavily on me as we had to turn people away when supplies ran out.
Returning home, I knew I had to do more. Along with the Mission Minded Life team, I became a board member for the Samuel Grimes Initiative for At-Risk Youth. We’re working to establish a treatment and support center for those struggling with addiction and mental health in Liberia. During my second trip in 2024, I helped 26 men graduate from a drug treatment program and continued to organize block parties that provided vital resources to hundreds of people.
Inspired by the resilience and humility of the Liberian people, I co-founded the Bright Business and Resource Center, Inc., alongside Liberian National Police Officer Robert Cisco. Our goal is to empower the people of Liberia by offering medical care, clothing, food, educational resources, and wage-building programs, helping them lead productive, self-sufficient lives.
To those who ask about my trips to Africa, I say: Liberia is poor, yet rich—rich in humility, resilience, and faith. And it is through faith that we continue to extend not a handout, but a hand up.
